Dishwasher not filling with water? Check the tap, hose and float

Updated: October 2026

A dishwasher without water usually means a closed tap, a clogged filter or a triggered anti-flood protection. You can check many of these yourself in 20 minutes.

Before you start

Before unscrewing the hose, unplug the dishwasher and close the water. Don't take apart the base of a built-in dishwasher if you have no experience. Water and electricity don't mix.

Step by step

  1. Check the tap and pressure

Make sure the tap under the sink is fully open and water flows normally from the kitchen tap.

  2. Close the door fully

The dishwasher won't let water in if the sensor doesn't detect a closed door. Check the racks or dishes aren't blocking it.

  3. Straighten the inlet hose

The hose behind the dishwasher often kinks when it's pushed into the cabinet. Pull the dishwasher out and check the hose along its length.

  4. Clean the filter in the hose

Close the water and unscrew the hose from the tap. There's a filter in the connector. Rinse it and clean it with a brush. Hand-tighten the hose.

  5. Check the Aquastop window

At the tap end of the hose there's often a box with a window. Red in the window means the leak protection has triggered. The hose then usually needs replacing and the cause of the leak needs checking.

  6. Check for water in the base

If water has collected in the tray under the dishwasher, a float blocks the inlet. This usually has its own leak error code. Turn the dishwasher off, close the water and tell the repair shop.

  7. Restart the dishwasher

Unplug it for 10 minutes, turn it on and run a short programme. Listen for water rushing in after the start.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • the Aquastop window is red or there's water in the base
  • the filter is clean, the tap open, and still no water flows
  • the dishwasher hums but you hear no water
  • water keeps flowing, even after the programme ends

Repair or buy new?

If it's just the filter, the fix costs 0 zł. Replacing the valve or the Aquastop hose pays off in most dishwashers younger than 8 years. With an old dishwasher and several faults at once, consider a new one.

FAQ

What is Aquastop?

It's anti-flood protection in the inlet hose. When it detects a leak, it shuts off the water and often turns its window red.

Why won't the dishwasher fill after moving house?

Most often a closed tap, a kinked hose or a filter clogged after plumbing work.

Can I use the dishwasher with a red Aquastop window?

No. First find the leak and replace the hose. Otherwise you risk flooding.
