PS5, Xbox or Switch controller will not pair? Controller reset step by step
A controller usually will not connect because of a weak battery, a busy pairing slot or the wrong cable. Start with the simple steps.

You can reset a controller without any risk to your data. Do not use sharp objects on the reset button, because they can damage it. Take a thin pin or a paper clip and press gently. Warning: resetting the controller removes its pairing, so you will need to pair it again afterwards.
Step by step
Charge the controller and remove interference
Charge the controller and move it close to the console or computer. Turn off other Bluetooth devices nearby.
Check the cable
Connect the controller with a USB cable and see if it works wired. Try a different data cable, because charge-only cables do not work.
Remove the controller from the Bluetooth list
Delete the controller from the Bluetooth device list on the console or system. Then pair it again.
Pair a Sony controller
DualSense and DualShock 4: hold the PS button and Share (DS4) or Create (DualSense) together until the light bar flashes quickly. Select the controller in the Bluetooth list.
Pair an Xbox controller
Turn on the console and the controller with the Xbox button. Then hold the pairing button on the top of the controller, near the USB port, for about 3 seconds until the logo flashes quickly. Also press the pairing button on the console.
Pair a Nintendo controller
Joy-Con: detach them and briefly attach them to the console until they sync. You can also hold the small sync button on the rail between SL and SR. Pro Controller: hold the sync button on top of the controller, next to the USB-C port, until the lights start flashing.
Reset the controller and update the firmware
Sony controller: turn it off and press the small button in the hole on the back, next to the Sony logo, with a pin for at least 5 seconds. Then connect it with a USB cable and press PS. Update the controller firmware through the console or the manufacturer’s app.
- The controller does not turn on even when charged with another cable.
- The controller’s USB port is loose.
- The sticks drift by themselves and a reset does not help.
- The battery is swollen.
