Washing machine won't turn on or open the door? What to check before calling a repair shop
A dead washing machine is often a locked control panel, a tripped fuse or a door lock waiting for the water to be pumped out. You can check these things yourself in a few minutes.
- Most common cause
- power supply, panel lock, door lock
- Time
- 10–15 minutes
- Repair shop
- 160–350 zł (lock), 410–1000 zł (electronics)
Don't force the door open when there's water in the drum. Drain it first through the pump filter. Be careful when checking the socket and fuses.
Step by step
Check the power
Plug another device into the same socket. Check the fuse and the residual-current breaker in the fuse box. The washing machine often has its own circuit.
Turn off the child lock
A key or padlock symbol on the display means the panel is locked. You usually turn it off by holding two buttons for 3–5 seconds (check the manual).
Close the door properly
The washing machine won't start unless the lock clicks. Check that no laundry is caught in the door seal.
Door won't open: wait and drain the water
The lock keeps the door shut for another 1–3 minutes after the wash. If there's water in the drum, run the “Drain” program or drain it through the filter. Many models also have an emergency release cord next to the pump filter.
Do a reset
Unplug the washing machine for 10 minutes. This clears a frozen electronics state.
Write down the error code
If the washing machine shows an error code, look it up in the manual. Many errors come down to a closed water valve, a kinked hose or a clogged filter.
- The washing machine trips the fuse right after you switch it on.
- The display lights up, but nothing responds even after a reset.
- The door lock doesn't release even though the drum is empty and you've waited.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| Door lock replacement | 160–350 zł |
| Door handle / hinge replacement | 140–300 zł |
| Control module repair / replacement | 410–1000 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
A lock and a handle are cheap repairs. An electronics module in an old, cheap washing machine can cost almost as much as a new one. Compare the cost with the machine's value in the calculator.

How do I open the washing machine door during a power cut?
Drain the water through the pump filter, then pull the emergency release cord (often next to the filter). If there isn't one, wait for the power to come back and run the drain program.
Does resetting the washing machine erase my settings?
Usually only the current program. Water hardness settings and favorite programs stay.
My washing machine is blinking all its lights. What does it mean?
Most often it's an error code shown by blinking. The number of blinks points to the fault. Check the table in the manual.
