Laptop won't turn on? Power drain, charger test and other steps before a repair shop
A dead laptop is often just a frozen power controller or a faulty charger. A few simple steps let you check this without a screwdriver.
- Most common cause
- the charger, frozen power or the screen
- Time
- 15–20 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- from 100 zł (charger) to 500–1500 zł (motherboard)
Don't open a laptop that's under warranty. If the laptop got wet, don't plug it in. Take it to a repair shop right away.
Step by step
Drain the residual power
Unplug the charger and all USB devices. Hold the power button for 30–60 seconds. Then plug in only the charger and try to turn it on. Many laptops (for example Lenovo, Acer, Dell) have a small battery reset hole on the underside. Press it with a paperclip for 10 seconds.
Check the charger
Is the light on the charger on? Is the cable frayed near the plug? Does the charging light on the laptop come on? If you have a second charger with the same power and plug (or a USB-C charger with enough power), try it. The charger is a common and cheap cause.
Listen and look
Does the fan spin, the keyboard light up and the power light come on, but the screen stays black? The laptop is probably working and just has no picture. Shine a flashlight at the screen to check the backlight.
Connect an external monitor
Connect the laptop to a TV or monitor with an HDMI cable. In Windows, press Win+P a few times. If the picture shows up on the external screen, the problem is the screen panel, its cable or the backlight, not the whole laptop.
Pay attention to beeps and blinking lights
Many laptops signal a fault with beeps or LED colors (for example Dell, HP). Count them and look up what they mean on the manufacturer's website. They often point to the RAM, the battery or the motherboard.
Force a start without the battery
If the battery is removable, take it out and start the laptop on the charger alone. A completely worn-out battery can block startup.
- The laptop got wet or you smell burning.
- The power socket is loose, or charging only works when you wiggle the plug.
- Nothing responds even with a working charger and after the power drain.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| New charger (third-party / original) | 100–350 zł |
| Power socket replacement | 150–300 zł |
| Screen replacement | 400–2500 zł, depending on the model |
| Motherboard repair | 500–1500 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
A charger, a power socket and a battery are repairs that almost always pay off. A motherboard in a laptop older than 5–6 years often costs more than the laptop is worth. Before you pay, compare the price with its value in the calculator.

Can I use a charger from another laptop?
Only if it has the same plug, voltage (usually 19–20 V) and at least the same wattage. With USB-C, check that the charger supports USB-C PD and has enough power, usually 65 W or more.
My laptop turns on and immediately shuts off. What does that mean?
Often overheating (a dusty heatsink), a worn battery or a power fault on the motherboard. Try it on the charger alone, without the battery. If it still shuts off, it needs a diagnosis.
Can I recover the data from the drive if the laptop won't turn on?
Almost always, yes. The drive works independently of the rest of the laptop. A repair shop can take it out and copy the data, often for a few dozen złoty.
