Vacuum pulsing or weak suction? Cleaning the filter, step by step

Turn the vacuum off and unplug it, or take out the battery. Wait 30 minutes for the motor to cool. Don’t put a wet filter back into the vacuum, because it can damage the motor. Don’t unscrew the motor housing.

Step by step

  1. Turn it off and wait 30 minutes

The motor may have overheated and the protection kicked in. When it has cooled, empty the dust bin.

  2. Check the tube, inlet and brush

Remove blockages, such as a sock or clumped dust. Look into the tube against the light and detach the parts to check each one separately. On a Dyson, also check the cyclone, and on a Samsung, the bin and the cyclone filters.

  3. Clean the brush

Cut off tangled hair and threads from the roller with scissors. A jammed brush strains the motor.

  4. Take out the filter and clean it

Many filters can be washed in cold water, with no detergent, as the manual says. Squeeze it out and dry it for at least 24 hours. On a Dyson, wash it in cold water, squeeze it out and dry it for 24 hours.

  5. Put in a dry filter

The filter must be completely dry. Press it in all the way so it fits well.

  6. Test without the attachment

Run the vacuum without the attachment to check the suction. If it’s strong, the blockage was in the attachment or the brush.

  7. Watch whether the problem comes back

If the pulsing returns after a few minutes of cleaning, the cause may be the battery or the motor.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The pulsing or loss of power comes back even with a clean filter and no blockage.
  • You smell burning, or the motor is loud and grinds.
  • The battery drains quickly or gets very hot.
  • The casing is melting or smoke comes out of the vacuum.
