Drone short flight time or shaky gimbal? What to do before a repair

Updated: October 2026

Short flight time is usually worn or cold batteries and wind. A shaking gimbal often just has the cover on or needs calibrating.

Don't charge or use a swollen battery. Calibrate on a flat, stable surface away from metal. Don't fly with damaged propellers.

Step by step

  1. Check battery health

In the manufacturer's app see the cycle count and battery status. A battery after several hundred cycles or with uneven cell voltages shortens flights.

  2. Warm the batteries in winter

In the cold a battery loses capacity. Keep it in your pocket before flying and let the drone hover for a minute before you set off.

  3. Replace damaged propellers

Chipped or bent propellers increase power draw and vibration. Propellers are cheap, replace them in pairs.

  4. Remove the gimbal cover

Remove the gimbal transport cover before turning the drone on. Switching on with the cover causes an error and shaking.

  5. Calibrate the gimbal and IMU

In the manufacturer's app run automatic gimbal calibration and, if needed, IMU calibration. Do it on a flat, level surface.

  6. Update the firmware

Update the drone, controller and batteries. Updates improve stabilisation and battery management.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • the battery is swollen
  • the gimbal shakes despite calibration or is bent after a crash
  • the camera shows a black picture
  • after a crash the drone drifts to one side

How much does a repair shop charge?

New battery410–1100 zł
Gimbal repair480–1200 zł
Set of propellers50–160 zł
Diagnosis110–200 zł

Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.

Repair or buy new?

You can replace propellers and batteries yourself, no repair shop needed. Repairing a gimbal after a crash usually pays off with more expensive drones, but with cheap models it's often close to the price of a new one.

FAQ

Why does my drone fly for less and less time?

The battery wears out, and cold, wind and damaged propellers also shorten flights.

Why does the gimbal shake?

Often because the cover was on at power-up, it isn't calibrated, or it was damaged in a crash.

How do I calibrate the gimbal?

In the manufacturer's app, in the gimbal settings, on a flat surface away from metal.
