Oven clock flashing and not heating? What to do step by step

Updated: October 2026

A flashing clock after a power cut is most often a request to set the time. Until you set it, many ovens will not start heating.

Before you start

Before you try anything, make sure the oven is cold. Do not open the casing and do not touch the electrical wiring. Switch off the circuit breaker with dry hands and with the knobs turned off. Warning: resetting the electronics module on some ovens erases saved automatic programs, so write down your favorite settings.

Step by step

  1. Set the current time

Usually the clock symbol flashes. Use the + and − buttons and the clock button to confirm. The exact order is in the manual under “setting the clock”.

  2. Check the cooking time and end time

If a cooking time or end time is set, the oven will switch off by itself or will not start. Cancel it by setting the value to 0:00.

  3. Check demo mode and the lock

In demo mode or with the lock on, the panel works but the heating does not. Look for the padlock symbol and the word “demo”. How to turn it off is in the manual.

  4. Set the knobs to zero

Turn all the knobs to the zero position, then choose the function and temperature again from the start.

  5. Switch off the oven at the circuit breaker for 1 minute

Switch off the breaker in the fuse box, wait a minute and switch it back on. This is a simple reset of the electronics.

  6. Check whether the inside heats up properly

Set 200°C and after 10 minutes check whether it is getting warm. If it still does not heat even with the time set, the heating element or the electronics may be faulty.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The clock keeps flashing even after you set the time.
  • The oven does not heat up, although the fan and light work.
  • It trips the circuit breakers in your home when you switch it on.
  • You smell burning or see a damaged heating element.

FAQ

Why does my oven not heat when the clock is flashing?

Many models block heating until you set the time after a power cut.

Does a power cut damage the oven?

No. The electronics just reset. You only need to set the clock again.

What should I do if my oven only heats from the top?

Check the mode, in case grill or top heating is selected. If that is not it, the bottom heating element may be faulty.
