Phone storage full? How to free up space without losing photos
Full storage slows your phone and blocks updates. Freeing up a few GB usually takes a few minutes and costs nothing.

Warning: deleted photos and files are not easy to recover. First copy what matters to the cloud or a computer and check that the copy is complete. Only then start deleting.
Step by step
Check what takes up space
Go to Settings → Storage (on iPhone: General → iPhone Storage). Start with the biggest items.
Copy your photos and videos
Move them to the cloud (Google Photos, iCloud) or to a computer. Check that the copy is complete before you delete anything.
Delete local copies
Once your photos are safe in the cloud, delete them from the phone. On iPhone, turn on iCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage. On Samsung and Pixel, use sync and delete the local copies.
Delete unused apps
Uninstall apps you do not use. On iPhone you can “offload” an app, which keeps its data.
Clear messenger data
In WhatsApp and Messenger, delete old media and large files from chats.
Clear the cache
Clear the cache of your browser and apps. On Android: Settings → Apps → the app → Storage → Clear cache.
Use the manufacturer’s tool
Samsung: Settings → Device care → Storage. Pixel: Settings → Storage → Free up space, or the Files by Google app, Clean tab. Xiaomi: Security app → Cleaner.

- The phone does not see the memory card, or the card will not format.

Repair or buy new?
Freeing up space is usually free and fully a do-it-yourself job. Replacing internal storage is rarely possible, and when it is, it is expensive. If you constantly run out of space, the cloud or a memory card is a cheaper route than a new phone.

How much free space should a phone have?
Leave at least a few GB. When storage is full, the phone slows down and cannot install updates.
Does clearing the cache delete my data?
No. The cache is temporary files. Just do not touch the “Clear data” option, because it removes the app’s account and settings.
Do photos in the cloud take up space on my phone?
Not if you turn on space optimization or delete the local copies.
Can I always expand storage with a card?
Only on phones with a microSD card slot. iPhones do not have one.
