Cracked phone screen: what to do right away and what it costs
You can't fix a cracked screen yourself, but you can do a few things right away: protect your data, protect your fingers and decide whether a replacement pays off.
- Do right away
- back up and put film over the cracks
- Repair shop time
- 1–3 hours
- Cost
- from about 270 zł to over 2050 zł
Glass can cut your fingers. Put tape or film over the cracks. Don't press the screen if something bulges under it, because it could be a swollen battery.
Step by step
Back up your data
If the screen still works, back up your photos and data right away (iCloud, Google, computer). A cracked screen can stop responding at any moment.
Protect the cracks
Put clear tape or a cheap screen protector over it. You'll protect your fingers and slow the cracks from spreading.
Check touch and picture
Drag your finger over the whole screen, e.g. by moving an icon. Dead zones, coloured lines or black spots mean the display is damaged, not just the glass.
Keep the phone away from moisture
Moisture can get in through the cracks. Don't use the phone in the rain or in the bathroom until it's repaired.
Choose the type of screen
An original screen has the best colours, brightness and Face ID or fingerprint performance. A compatible one is cheaper but can be dimmer, thicker or drain the battery faster. On an iPhone a compatible screen shows a non-genuine part message.
Compare the cost with the phone's value
If the screen replacement costs more than half the value of the used phone, consider buying another one. Our calculator works this out for you.
- the screen doesn't respond or shows lines
- the phone is bulging
- the phone got wet through the cracks
- the crack has spread to the back and frame

Repair or buy new?
In a cheaper phone a screen replacement often costs as much as a working used one. In a more expensive phone the replacement usually pays off, especially with an original part. Protect your data first.
