Samsung TV: reset, update and Smart Remote pairing
You can usually fix a Samsung TV with a restart, an update and by pairing the remote again.

Warning: a reset deletes accounts, apps, channels and settings. Write down your login details and take a photo of your settings. Also exit any apps first, because the reset is not available inside them.
Step by step
Do a hard restart
Turn the TV off and unplug it for 60 seconds. With the cable still unplugged, hold the power button on the TV for about 30 seconds, then plug it in and turn it on.
Update the software
Settings → Support → Software Update. Check the internet connection.
Replace the remote’s batteries
Put in new batteries and check the contacts. Clean the IR emitter with a dry cloth.
Pair the Smart Remote
Stand close to the TV and hold Return and Play/Pause together for 3 seconds until the pairing message appears.
Use the phone app
Install the SmartThings app as a backup remote. The buttons on the TV will also work.
Reset the TV
Settings → General & Privacy → Reset, or Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Reset. The default PIN is 0000.
Remember the backup
Warning: a reset deletes apps, accounts and channels. Write down your login details beforehand, and set the TV up again after the reset.
