E-scooter short range, cutting out or won't turn on? What to check

Updated: October 2026

Short range is often under-inflated tyres and cold weather, not a dead battery right away. Cutting out while riding can be a loose connector or the charger.

Don't open the scooter battery. Damaged lithium cells can catch fire. If the battery is swollen, hot or smells of chemicals, don't charge the scooter at home and take it to a repair shop.

Step by step

  1. Check tyre pressure

Under-inflated tyres can eat over ten percent of the range. Pump them to the pressure on the tyre or in the manual.

  2. Allow for cold and riding mode

In winter the battery gives less energy, and sport mode and hills use much more. Compare range in similar conditions.

  3. Check the charger

The charger LED should change colour while charging. If it doesn't, try another charger with the same specifications.

  4. Inspect the charging port

Check the port for dirt or water and that the cover closes. Moisture in the port can block charging.

  5. Update the firmware

Check for a firmware update in the manufacturer's app. Fixes often concern battery management.

  6. Note the error code

If the scooter cuts out and shows a code, write it down. It often points to the battery, controller or brake sensor.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • the battery is swollen or hot
  • the scooter cuts out when accelerating despite a charged battery
  • range has halved in warm weather
  • the scooter stopped working after rain

How much does a repair shop charge?

Repair or buy new?

Before paying for a battery, check the tyres and charger. A new battery is often half the price of the scooter, so with a cheap model consider buying a new one.
