Electric scooter flat tyre and weak brakes: what you can fix yourself and what needs a repair shop

Updated: October 2026

A punctured inner tube and a misadjusted brake are the most common faults on electric scooters. Don't put brakes off for later, because your safety depends on them.

Before you start

Don't ride a scooter with poorly working brakes. Switch the scooter off before any adjustment. When removing a wheel with a motor, disconnect the cables as the manufacturer instructs.

Step by step

  1. Check the tyre pressure

Most scooters with pneumatic tyres need about 2.5–3.5 bar (check the side of the tyre or the manual). Pressure that's too low is the main cause of “snake bite” punctures and a shorter range. Check it every 1–2 weeks.

  2. Find the puncture

Inflate the tube and listen for a hiss, or brush the tyre with soapy water. Bubbles will show you the hole. Remove any thorn, glass or wire from the tyre, otherwise the new tube will be punctured too.

  3. Quick fix: sealant gel

A sealant poured in through the valve will close small holes and protect the tube from new ones. It's a good fix for minor punctures, but not for cuts.

  4. Replacing the inner tube: you can do the front wheel yourself

You can usually take off the front wheel with a few bolts. The rear wheel with the motor is harder because you have to disconnect the cables. If you have no experience, take it to a repair shop, and a bike repair shop will do too. While you're at it, consider reinforced tubes or tubeless tyres.

  5. Adjust the disc brake

If the lever “sinks” to the handlebar, tighten the cable with the adjuster at the lever or the caliper. Disc squealing and braking weakly? Wipe it with isopropyl alcohol. Don't touch the disc with greasy fingers and don't lubricate it with anything.

  6. Check the pads and the electric brake

When the pads have less than about 1 mm of lining left, replace them. Check the motor braking strength (KERS) in the app and set it higher. This takes some load off the mechanical brake.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The brake doesn't stop the scooter reliably despite adjustment.
  • The disc is bent or cracked.
  • The tyre has cracks, bulges or bald spots.
  • You hear grinding from the motor wheel or feel play in it.

Repair or buy new?

Tyres and brakes are cheap wear-and-tear repairs. They always pay off. The expensive parts are the battery, controller and motor. In that case, use the calculator to check whether it's better to top up and buy a new scooter.

FAQ

Are tubeless or solid tyres better?

Solid tyres can't get a puncture, but they absorb bumps less well and grip worse on wet roads. Tubeless with sealant gel is a good compromise. The choice depends on the roads you ride on.

Can I ride on a slightly punctured tyre?

No. Riding on a flat ruins the tyre and the rim, and on the rear wheel even the motor. The scooter also handles and brakes worse.

Will a bike repair shop replace the inner tube in a scooter?

Many bike repair shops do, especially on the front wheel. It's better to take the rear wheel with the motor to a scooter repair shop.
