Laptop battery draining fast? What actually helps
Batteries lose capacity with age, but laptops often drain faster because of background programs, brightness and power settings. First check how much capacity the battery really has.
- Most common cause
- worn battery or background programs
- Time
- 15–30 minutes
- Repair shop
- 340–820 zł to replace the battery
A swollen battery is dangerous. If the casing bulges or the touchpad lifts, stop using the laptop and take it to a repair shop.
Step by step
Check battery wear
On Windows open the command prompt and type “powercfg /batteryreport”. In the report compare “Design capacity” with “Full charge capacity”. On macOS see Settings → Battery → Battery Health.
Check what uses power
On Windows open Settings → System → Power & battery → Battery usage. Close or uninstall programs that use a lot of energy in the background.
Lower the screen brightness
The screen is the biggest power hog. Brightness around 50% can add an hour of use.
Turn on power saving
Set the power mode to balanced or power saver. Turn off keyboard backlight and Bluetooth when you don't need them.
Disable startup programs
In Task Manager, on the “Startup apps” tab, disable what doesn't need to start with the system.
Update the system and BIOS
Updates often improve power management. Download the BIOS only from the manufacturer's site.
- capacity has dropped below 60–70% of the original
- the laptop shuts down suddenly at a dozen percent
- the battery is swollen
- the laptop won't work without the charger

When should I replace a laptop battery?
When capacity has dropped below 60–70% of the original or the laptop shuts down suddenly at a dozen percent.
Does battery calibration help?
It improves the percentage reading but doesn't restore capacity. A worn battery has to be replaced.
Does keeping the laptop plugged in all the time hurt the battery?
Less so in newer laptops, especially with battery care turned on (charging to 80%).
