Washing machine door won't open after a wash? What to do step by step
The washing machine lock releases with a delay, and the door won't open when there is water in the drum. Usually a little patience and draining are enough.
- Most common cause
- lock delay, water in the drum or child lock on
- Time
- 5–20 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 160–480 zł (lock or electronics)
Unplug the washing machine before you open it in an emergency. The water in the drum can be hot, so be careful when draining it. Put a flat tray and some rags underneath, because the water will spill. Don't force the door, because you will damage the lock.
Step by step
Wait 2 to 3 minutes
After the program ends, the lock has a delay. Wait a few minutes before you start yanking the handle.
Drain the water
If there is water in the drum, run the Drain program. The door won't open while there is water inside.
Check the child lock
Look at the display for a lit padlock. If there is one, turn the lock off. Usually you hold the padlock button for 3 seconds.
Unplug the washing machine for 5 minutes
Pull the plug from the socket and wait 5 minutes. Turn it back on and check the door. This resets the lock electronics.
Open the door in an emergency
Unplug the machine and drain the water through the small hose at the pump filter. Then pull the emergency cord down, usually hidden behind the filter flap. Be careful, because the water can be hot. If there is no cord, check your model's manual for how to open the door by hand.
Check the lock and the hinge
After opening, look at the door hook and the lock. If the hook is broken off or the door doesn't close, the lock or hinges need replacing.
- The door won't open even after draining and using the emergency cord.
- The washing machine doesn't drain, and the filter is clean.
- The door hook or the lock is broken.
- The lock doesn't secure the door before a wash and the machine won't start.

Repair or buy new?
A locked door is usually a small thing you can solve yourself. Replacing the lock is a cheap repair that almost always pays off. Only control module problems in an old washing machine get expensive. In that case, check the calculator.

How long do I wait for the door to unlock?
Usually 2 to 3 minutes after the program ends. After a hot wash it can take longer.
Can I force the washing machine door open?
No. It's better to use the emergency cord. Forcing it breaks the hook and ruins the lock.
Where is the emergency cord on a washing machine?
Usually behind the pump filter flap at the bottom of the casing. Check your model's manual for the exact spot.
