Bluetooth headphones cutting out or too quiet? What to check and how to fix it
Cutting out and quiet sound in wireless headphones is usually about range, interference or a dirty mesh. Start with the simple steps.
- Most common cause
- interference, range, a dirty mesh or volume settings
- Time
- 10–20 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 200–540 zł for a repair or part replacement
Clean the speaker mesh only with a dry, soft brush. Don't use water or pins. Pairing again removes the saved connection, but it does not delete your data.
Step by step
Keep your phone close
Ideally on the same side of your body as the headphones, for example in a pocket, with no walls or metal in between.
Remove sources of interference
Turn off other Bluetooth devices. A Wi-Fi router or a microwave nearby can also make the sound cut out.
Check the volume
Turn up the volume on your phone and on the headphones. Turn off the volume limit and hearing protection mode.
Clean the speaker mesh
Gently brush the mesh with a dry, soft brush. Remove the film from new headphones. With in-ear models, choose the right size of ear tips, because loose ones lose bass and volume.
Check noise cancelling and the equalizer
Make sure noise cancelling is not in the wrong mode and that the equalizer is not cutting the volume.
Update the software
Update the headphones in the manufacturer's app and update your phone's system.
Restart and pair again
Turn the headphones off and on (for in-ear models, put them in the case for 30 seconds). Remove them from your phone's Bluetooth list and pair them again. With wired headphones, check the cable: move it and listen for whether the crackle goes away, and clean the jack.
- The sound cuts out even right next to the phone and after pairing again.
- One side plays quieter even after cleaning and checking the balance.
- The headphones got wet or were dropped.
- The cable crackles when moved or the plug is loose.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| Replacing the cable or plug on wired headphones | 70–200 zł |
| Replacing the battery in headphones | 140–410 zł |
| Replacing the driver / speaker | 140–410 zł |
| Diagnosis | 40–140 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
First do all the free steps. If the hardware has failed, repairing cheaper headphones usually isn't worth it. For more expensive models (for example over-ear ones with a replaceable battery) it definitely is. Check it in the calculator.
