Xbox freezing? Hard restart, offline update and console reset
Most Xbox freezes go away after a hard restart or a reset that keeps your games. Start with the gentlest steps.

A hard restart deletes nothing. Warning: “Reset and remove everything” erases accounts, games and settings, so first back up your saves to the cloud or a USB drive and write down your login details. Do not unplug the power during a system update.
Step by step
Do a hard restart
Hold the Xbox button on the console for about 10 seconds until it turns off. Unplug the power for 10 seconds, then plug it in and turn it on again.
Check ventilation and free space
The console should not sit in a closed cabinet. Also check the free space on the drive, because a full drive slows the system down.
Update the system
If the console at least gets to the menu, install the update in Settings. Update the game that freezes too.
Use the offline update from a USB drive
If the console will not start, you can install an offline system update (OSU). Download the file on a computer from support.xbox.com, copy it to a USB drive and run it in the console’s troubleshooter. The exact steps depend on your model, so follow Microsoft’s instructions.
Reset the console and keep your games
Go to Settings → System → Console info → Reset console. Choose “Reset and keep my games & apps”. It repairs the system and your games stay.
Reset everything as a last step
Warning: “Reset and remove everything” erases everything from the console. Use it only if the earlier steps did not help, and only after a backup.

- The fan runs loudly or does not work at all.
- There is still no picture after a reset, or the console does not reach the start screen.
- The disc drive does not read discs or the drive makes clicking sounds.
