PS5 or Xbox: no picture over HDMI. What to check before you hand in the console
No picture doesn't always mean a broken port on the console. Often the culprit is the cable, the TV settings or a resolution the TV doesn't support.
- Most common cause
- the cable, the TV input or the video settings
- Time
- 15 minutes
- HDMI port replacement at a repair shop
- 200–450 zł
Don't force anything into the HDMI port, and don't wiggle the plug while the console is on. A broken-off port is the most common console fault, usually after someone yanks the cable.
Step by step
Check the input on your remote
It sounds obvious, but it's a common cause. Switch the HDMI input with your TV remote (the Source/Input button) and check each input in turn.
Swap the HDMI cable and the TV port
Use the cable that came with the console, or a certified HDMI 2.1 (Ultra High Speed) cable. Try a different HDMI port on the TV. Older cables often can't handle 4K at 120 Hz.
Unplug the console from power for 5 minutes
Turn the console off, pull the power cable out of the wall socket, wait a few minutes and plug it back in. This simple reset often brings the picture back.
PS5: start Safe Mode and change the resolution
With the console off, hold the power button until you hear the second beep (approx. 7 seconds). Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. In the menu, choose “Change Video Output” → “Change Resolution”. The console will start in a lower resolution.
Xbox: reset the display settings
With the console on, hold the Xbox button on the console for approx. 10 seconds until it turns off. Then hold the pairing button and the eject button together (on the Series S without a disc drive: pairing and Xbox), press the Xbox button and keep holding until you hear the second beep. The console will start in low resolution, which you can then change in the settings.
Look into the console's HDMI port with a flashlight
Inside the port there's a plastic tab with contacts. If it's cracked, crooked or any contact is bent, the port is mechanically damaged. Then only a replacement at a repair shop will help.
- The HDMI port is clearly damaged, loose or crooked.
- The console gives no picture on any TV, with any cable, even in Safe Mode.
- The console shuts off by itself or a light blinks. It could be the power supply or the motherboard.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| HDMI port replacement: PS5 | 250–450 zł |
| HDMI port replacement: Xbox Series X/S | 200–400 zł |
| HDMI chip repair on the motherboard (retimer) | 300–600 zł |
| HDMI 2.1 cable (certified) | 40–100 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
Replacing the HDMI port is usually worth it. The PS5 and Xbox Series are still worth much more than the repair costs. After the repair, route the cable so nobody can trip over it. That's how most ports get destroyed.

Does replacing the HDMI port void the warranty?
Replacement at an unauthorized repair shop usually does. If the console is under warranty and the port isn't mechanically damaged, contact the manufacturer or the shop first.
Why does the picture flicker or keep cutting out?
Most often it's a cable that can't keep up with 4K/120 Hz, or an HDR/VRR setting your TV doesn't handle well. Try a shorter, certified cable and temporarily turn off VRR and 120 Hz.
Can I fix the port myself?
The port is soldered to the motherboard. Without a hot-air rework station and experience, it's easy to damage the board. This is a job for a repair shop.
