Warning: a factory reset deletes channels, installed apps, accounts and settings. Write down your login details and take a photo of your settings, then set the TV up again after the reset.

Step by step

  1. Do a hard restart

Turn the TV off and unplug it for 60 seconds. With the cable still unplugged, hold the power button on the TV for about 30 seconds, then plug it in and turn it on.

  2. Update the software

In the settings (Support or Update), check for an update and check the internet connection.

  3. Check the app

If one app stutters, clear its data and cache, or uninstall it and install it again.

  4. Disconnect HDMI devices

Unplug the HDMI cable from the set-top box, console or soundbar. Check whether one of the devices is causing the freezes.

  5. Find the reset in the settings

Samsung: Settings → General & Privacy → Reset (default PIN is 0000). LG: Settings → All Settings → General. Sony Google TV: Settings → System → About → Reset. TCL Google TV: Settings → System → About → Factory reset. Philips: the name depends on the model, so check the manual.

  6. Do the factory reset

Warning: the reset deletes accounts, apps, channels and settings. Before you start, write down your login details and take a photo of your settings.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The screen has stripes, spots or goes dark after a few seconds.
  • The TV clicks but does not turn on.
  • It still freezes after a factory reset.
  • You smell burning.
