Dell laptop: SupportAssist, F12 diagnostics and system recovery
Dell laptops have built-in tools for hardware testing and system recovery. You can reach them with the F12 key right after turning the laptop on.
- Most common cause
- a damaged system or a hardware problem
- Time
- 30–90 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 200–540 zł
Warning: restoring the system to factory settings deletes data from the drive. If possible, back up your documents and photos. Keep the charger plugged in for the whole process.
Step by step
Do a hard restart
If the laptop doesn't start normally, hold the power button for about 10 seconds until it turns off. Unplug the charger, wait a minute and start it again.
Open the boot menu
Turn on the laptop and press F12 repeatedly until the boot menu appears.
Run Diagnostics
In the menu, choose Diagnostics. The test checks things like the memory, drive and screen. Write down the error code if one appears, because it will help the repair shop.
Run SupportAssist OS Recovery
In the F12 menu, choose SupportAssist OS Recovery. The tool helps repair the system or restore it to an earlier state.
Choose the gentler option
Start with the repair option or restoring from a restore point. These usually keep your files.
Warning: factory reset
Warning: a factory restore deletes data from the drive. Back up before you confirm it.
- Diagnostics shows a drive, memory or motherboard error.
- The F12 menu doesn't open or the laptop doesn't start at all.
- The laptop shuts down suddenly and is very hot.
- The problem comes back after restoring the system.
