Coffee machine won’t froth milk? Cleaning the milk system, step by step
No foam is almost always caused by dried milk in the frother or a loose tube that doesn’t draw in air. A thorough wash usually fixes it.
- Most common cause
- clogged frother or loose milk tube
- Time
- 15–20 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 200–540 zł
Before you take the frother apart, wait for the machine to cool, because the steam nozzle and tip can be hot and burn you. Wash the parts in warm water, not boiling water. To clear the holes, use a thin needle carefully so you don’t scratch the plastic. Don’t soak any electrical parts.
Step by step
Use cold milk
The milk must come straight from the fridge. Whole milk, or milk marked “for frothing”, works best. Warm or skimmed milk froths poorly.
Remove the milk tip
Take off the frother (cappuccinatore, LatteGo, Panarello, depending on the model) and take it apart. On DeLonghi machines with a milk container, take apart all the lid parts. On a Philips LatteGo, split it into 2 parts. On a Saeco, take apart the Panarello or cappuccinatore.
Wash the parts and clear the holes
Wash the parts in warm water with a little dish soap and rinse them well. Check that the small air-intake holes aren’t blocked with dried milk. Clear them with a thin needle. The Philips LatteGo is also dishwasher safe.
Check the milk tube
If the tube is cracked, stretched or loose, it doesn’t draw in air and no foam forms. Push it all the way onto the tip, or replace it with a new one.
Put everything back tightly
Assemble the parts in the right order. The tube must sit firmly on the tip and the seals must lie in place. Any leak means no suction.
Run the milk system cleaning program
Use the cleaning program in the machine’s menu, or rinse the system with water as described in the manual. Then test with cold milk.
- The frother is clean and tight, but no foam forms.
- Nothing comes out of the steam nozzle, or very little.
- You can see a leak under the machine or near the milk system.
- The machine shows a steam or pump error that doesn’t go away after a restart.

Repair or buy new?
There is a good chance a wash and a new tube for a few dozen zloty is all you need. Repairing the boiler or pump in a cheap machine is sometimes not worth it, while in a more expensive model it usually is. Check it in the calculator.

How often should I wash the milk frother?
Rinse it with water after every use, or run a short rinse cycle, and take it apart and wash it thoroughly at least once a day if you use it often.
Why does my machine splatter milk instead of frothing it?
Usually the air intake is blocked or the tube is leaking. Clean the holes and check the connections.
Can I use plant-based milk?
Yes, but some froth poorly. Look for versions marked “barista”. Wash the system thoroughly afterwards.
