How to safely clean your phone’s charging port, step by step

Updated: October 2026

Dust and lint from your pocket can block the plug, and the phone stops charging. Cleaning the port takes 10 minutes and costs nothing.

Before you start

Switch the phone off before cleaning. Do not use metal objects (pins, needles, paper clips), because you can short or bend the contacts. Do not charge a phone that got wet or has a swollen battery.

Step by step

  1. Check the cable and charger

Before you clean the port, try a different cable and a different charger. This is the most common cause of charging trouble.

  2. Shine a flashlight into the port

See whether there is a grey layer of lint at the bottom. If so, the plug does not go in all the way and you have to hold it at an angle.

  3. Switch off the phone

Switching off lowers the risk of a short circuit while cleaning. Take off the case too, so you can reach the port easily.

  4. Pick out the lint with a wooden toothpick

Move it gently along the walls of the port and do not press on the contacts in the middle. Pull the lint outwards, do not push it deeper.

  5. Blow out the port

Use a rubber air blower or blow with your mouth. Use compressed air carefully and from a distance, because a strong jet can drive dirt deeper.

  6. Try charging again

Switch the phone on and plug in a working cable. The plug should go in all the way and hold firmly.

  7. If the port was wet

Wait until it dries before you plug anything in. Do not dry it with a hair dryer. Moisture in the port plus current means a risk of corrosion.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The port is clearly loose, or the contacts are bent or burnt.
  • The phone gets hot while charging or you smell burning.
  • The phone got wet.
  • The battery is swollen, or the screen or back lifts.

FAQ

What should I clean a phone port with?

A wooden or plastic toothpick, then a rubber air blower. Avoid metal.
