Cordless vacuum shuts off after a moment? What to check
A vacuum that cuts out after a moment usually has a blockage, a dirty filter or a worn battery. Start with the steps that cost nothing.
- Most common cause
- blockage, dirty filter or worn battery
- Time
- 15–30 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 270–680 zł for a battery
Use only the original charger. Don’t charge a battery that is swollen, very hot or damaged. Don’t open the battery pack, and don’t short the contacts with metal objects. Before cleaning, take out the battery or unplug the vacuum from the charger.
Step by step
Charge the vacuum fully
Use the original charger and check that the charging light is on. An undercharged battery can shut the vacuum off when it draws more power.
Clean the battery contacts
If the battery is removable, take it out and wipe the contacts with a dry cloth. Put it back in all the way until it clicks.
Check the mode and the trigger
Choose the right mode (for example Eco or Auto) and try switching on in a different one. On many Dyson models you have to keep the trigger pressed, because the motor runs only while it’s pressed. Check this in your model’s manual. On a Xiaomi, press the power button for longer.
Clear the blockage
The protection switches the motor off when something is clogged. Clean the tube, the brush and the inlet.
Clean the filter and empty the bin
A dirty filter causes overheating, and a Dyson then switches itself off. Wash the filter in cold water and dry it thoroughly before putting it back.
Wait and try again
If the vacuum is hot, wait 30 minutes. If it still cuts out, the battery may be worn, especially in a device that is several years old.
- The vacuum cuts out after a few seconds even with a clean filter and no blockage.
- The battery is swollen, very hot or smells odd.
- The charging light doesn’t come on, or blinks in an unusual way, even with the original charger.
- The vacuum doesn’t hold a charge for longer than a minute or two.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| Diagnosis at a repair shop | 70–200 zł |
| Replacing the battery | 270–680 zł |
| Replacing the charger | 110–340 zł |
| Replacing the motor or board | 410–950 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
If it’s a blockage or the filter, you fix it for free. If the battery is worn and the vacuum is more expensive (for example 1000 zł or more), replacing it for 200–500 zł is usually worth it. For a cheap model, a new device can make more sense. Check it in the calculator.

Why does my cordless vacuum cut out after a few seconds?
Most often the protection kicked in because of a blockage or a dirty filter. If not, a worn battery is to blame.
Can I replace the battery myself?
On models with a removable battery, yes. On others you have to open the casing, so it’s better to take it to a repair shop.
Does a Dyson have to be pressed the whole time?
On many models, yes. The motor runs only while you hold the trigger. Check your model’s manual.
