PS5 or PS4 freezing? Safe Mode and database rebuild step by step
You can often fix a freezing console without a repair shop. A restart, an update or a database rebuild in Safe Mode is usually enough.
- Most common cause
- database error, full drive or overheating
- Time
- 10–40 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 200–610 zł
Rebuilding the database does not delete games or saves. “Reset PS5” and “Initialize PS4” are different. Warning: they erase data from the console, so leave them for last and back up your saves to a USB drive or the cloud first. Do not unplug the console while it is rebuilding the database or updating.
Step by step
Turn the console fully off and unplug it
Turn the console off completely, not into rest mode. Unplug the power cable for 2 minutes, then plug it back in. Leave a few centimeters of free space at the back and sides for ventilation.
Check free space and updates
Install the system update and the update for the game that freezes. Make sure the drive has at least 10–15% free space. A full drive very often causes stuttering.
Delete and reinstall the problem game
If only one game freezes, delete it and download it again. Your saves in the cloud or on the drive stay.
Enter Safe Mode
Turn the console off by holding the power button for about 3 seconds. Then hold the power button again until you hear a second beep (about 7 seconds after the first). Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
Rebuild the database
In Safe Mode, choose “Clear Cache and Rebuild Database” (PS5) or “Rebuild Database” (PS4). This does not delete games or saves, but on a large drive it can take a while, even tens of minutes.
Update the system from Safe Mode
If the console will not start normally, Safe Mode also has a system software update option. Use it if you have internet or a USB drive with the update file.
Reset the console as a last step
Warning: “Reset PS5” and “Initialize PS4” can erase data from the console, and the versions that reinstall the system software erase everything. Back up to a USB drive or the cloud first and write down your account login details.
- The console beeps, shuts off after a few minutes or gets very hot.
- It still shows no picture or will not start after Safe Mode and a reset.
- The drive makes clicking or knocking sounds, or the console reports the drive as faulty.
- You smell burning or see signs of liquid damage.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| Dust cleaning and thermal paste replacement | 160–340 zł |
| Drive or SSD replacement with installation | 340–820 zł |
| HDMI port repair or replacement | 270–610 zł |
| Motherboard repair | 410–1200 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
A restart and a database rebuild cost 0 zł and often solve the problem. Dust cleaning at a repair shop is usually worth it too. If an older console has a damaged motherboard, check in the calculator whether it is better to put the money toward a new or used one.

Will rebuilding the database delete my games?
No. The rebuild option just reorganizes the content list on the drive. Your games and saves stay, but the console may run a bit slower for a while.
How do I leave Safe Mode?
Choose “Restart PS5” or “Restart PS4” in the menu. The console will start normally.
Why does my PS5 not respond to the controller in Safe Mode?
The controller must be connected with a USB cable, because Bluetooth does not work in this mode. Use a data cable, not a charge-only one.
