Camera memory card error or freezing? What to do and how to save your photos

Updated: October 2026

A card error usually doesn't mean a broken camera. Save your photos first, then look for the culprit: the card, the battery or the settings.

In short
Most common cause
faulty or incompatible memory card, or dirty contacts
Time

Before you start

Save your photos before you do anything else. Don't format the card if you have no backup. Warning: formatting a card deletes all photos and videos, so copy what you can to a computer first. Don't remove the card or battery while the camera is saving a photo.

Step by step

  1. Turn off the camera and take out the card

Switch the camera off before you remove the card. Wipe the contacts with a dry cloth and put the card back in. Check that the small write-protect switch (the slider on the side of the card) isn't set to “Lock”.

  2. Copy your photos to a computer

Put the card in a card reader on your computer. If you can see the files, copy them to your drive right away. Only then start experimenting with the card. If the computer can't see the card, try another reader or port.

  3. Check that the card is compatible

Look in the camera manual for the cards it supports: the type (SD, SDHC, SDXC) and the maximum capacity. Older cameras can't read large SDXC cards. Incompatible cards are sometimes rejected with an error message.

  4. Try a different card

Insert another card that works. If the camera runs without freezing, the first card is faulty. Cards wear out, especially cheap ones, and after a few years of heavy use it's worth replacing them.

  5. Restart the camera without the battery and card

Take out the battery and the card for a minute. Put them back and turn the camera on. Use a charged battery. Take the lens off and put it back on, checking that the contacts are clean.

  6. Update the firmware

Download the update from the manufacturer's website and install it as described in the instructions, usually through a memory card. Do this with a charged battery. Updates often fix freezing and card problems.

  7. Reset the camera settings

Find the reset option in the settings menu. Canon: Reset camera or Clear all camera settings. Sony: Setting Reset or Camera Settings Reset. Nikon: Reset all settings. Fujifilm: Reset. The exact name depends on the model. The reset affects the camera settings, not the photos on the card.

  8. Format the card in the camera

This is the last step. Warning: formatting deletes all photos and videos from the card, so only do it after you've copied your data. In the settings menu, choose Format and select the card. Always format new cards in the camera.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The camera doesn't see any card, even a new one, and the slot looks damaged.
  • The camera freezes with every card and battery.
  • The lens doesn't extend or you hear grinding.
  • The camera got wet or was dropped, and then started freezing.

Repair or buy new?

A card costs a few dozen zloty, so replace it first and update the firmware. Replacing the card slot in a more expensive camera usually pays off. For an old compact camera, where the board costs more than a used replacement, consider buying another one. Check it in the calculator.

FAQ

Can I recover photos from a damaged card?

Sometimes, yes. Stop using the card and try data recovery software on a computer. The fewer writes after the failure, the better the chance.

Can I format the card on a computer instead of in the camera?

You can, but the camera handles a card best when it's formatted in its own menu. Formatting in the camera sets the right file system.

My camera freezes with only one card. What does that mean?

Most likely that card is faulty or incompatible. Copy what you can from it and replace it.
