Steam Deck freezing? Forced restart and system restore

Updated: October 2026

Most Steam Deck freezes go away after a forced restart and an update. Reinstalling the system is the last resort.

Warning: reinstalling SteamOS from the recovery image erases data from the storage. First upload your saves to Steam Cloud and check which games you have only locally. Do not interrupt an update or restore.

Step by step

  1. Do a forced restart

Hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the console turns off. Wait a moment and turn it on again.

  2. Charge and update the system

Plug in the charger and update the system in Settings. Check whether the game has its own update.

  3. Verify the game files

In your library, open the game’s properties and run file verification. Missing or corrupted files will be downloaded again.

  4. Free up space and check the microSD card

Delete games you do not use. If the problem is with games on the card, check it on a computer and format it if needed. Warning: formatting the card erases everything on it.

  5. Restore the system only as a last resort

Prepare the SteamOS recovery image following Valve’s instructions on the Steam support page. Warning: reinstalling erases data from the device’s storage, so upload your saves to the cloud first.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The device does not turn on even with charging.
  • The sticks or buttons react by themselves, or the screen has stripes.
  • The console gets very hot and the fan howls.
  • The freezing comes back after reinstalling the system.

How much does a repair shop charge?

Motherboard repair540–1650 zł

Repair or buy new?

A restart, an update and file verification are free and usually enough. Replacing the fan or a stick is worth it. A motherboard in this class of device often costs so much that you should use the calculator to see if buying a new one makes more sense.

FAQ

Does a forced restart delete my games?

No. It is the same as a hard shutdown of a computer. Your games and saves stay.

When should I restore SteamOS?

When the system does not start, or errors continue after updates and restarts. Do it after backing up your saves to the cloud.

Are my game saves safe?

If the game supports Steam Cloud, yes. Before a reset, check in your library that syncing finished without errors.
