Console not reading discs, shutting down or won't turn on? What to check
A console that shuts itself down is most often overheating or has a power problem. A disc that won't read may be scratched, and the drive isn't always to blame.
- Most common cause
- overheating, power or a scratched disc
- Time
- 15–30 minutes

Unplug the console before cleaning the air vents. Don't open the power supply. Rebuilding the database doesn't delete games, but a full console initialisation deletes everything.
Step by step
Try the disc in another console
Clean the disc with a soft cloth from the centre outwards. If other discs work and this one doesn't, the problem is the disc.
Give it ventilation
The console needs a few centimetres of free space on every side. Don't put it in a closed cabinet. Vacuum the air intakes and outlets.
Check the cable and socket
Plug the console straight into a wall socket, without a power strip. Check the power cable sits firmly in the console.
Turn the console fully off
Hold the power button until the console turns off, unplug it for 2–3 minutes and turn it on again.
Rebuild the database
On PS5 and PS4 start safe mode and choose rebuild database. It helps with freezing and read errors. On Xbox do a hard reset by holding the power button (10 seconds).
Update the system
Install the latest system update. Fixes often concern the drive and stability.
- the console shuts down even with good ventilation
- the drive knocks loudly or won't eject the disc
- the console doesn't respond despite a working socket
- you smell burning

Repair or buy new?
Cleaning and new thermal paste are a cheap repair that solves most shutdown problems. The drive and power supply are usually worth repairing too, because a new console is expensive.
