Don't pour liquids into the controller. For cleaning use a cotton bud lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Don't open a controller under warranty, or you'll lose it.

Step by step

  1. Try another cable

Controllers often won't charge because the cable is charge-only or damaged at the plug. Use a cable that carries data, ideally the original.

  2. Charge from the console or a wall charger

Plug the controller directly into the console or a wall charger. Hubs and front-panel ports sometimes give too little power.

  3. Clean the USB-C port

Shine a torch into the port and pick out dust with a wooden toothpick. Don't use metal.

  4. Reset the controller

PS5 and PS4 controllers have a small reset hole on the back. Press the button inside with a paperclip for a few seconds. On an Xbox controller hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds to turn it off, then turn it on. Then pair it again with the console by cable.

  5. Clean sticky buttons

With a cotton bud and a little isopropyl alcohol wipe the gaps around the buttons and press them a few times.

  6. Update the controller

Consoles update controller firmware. Connect the controller by cable and check for updates in the device settings.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • the controller won't charge with any cable
  • the USB-C port is loose
  • the battery is swollen (the casing is splitting)
  • buttons don't work despite cleaning

Why won't my PS5 controller charge?

Most often because of a charge-only cable, a dirty port or a weak hub port. Try another cable and a port on the console.

Press the button in the small hole on the back with a paperclip for a few seconds, then connect it to the console by cable.

Is it worth replacing a controller battery?

Yes, if the controller otherwise works. It's cheaper than a new controller.
