Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: restart and factory reset, step by step
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones usually recover after a force restart and an update. A factory reset is the last step, because it deletes your data.
- Most common cause
- full storage, a faulty app or a bug after a MIUI/HyperOS update
- Time
- 10–30 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 200–540 zł for diagnostics and repair
A force restart does not delete data. A factory reset wipes everything, so first back up to Mi Cloud or to a computer. Make sure you know the password for your Google account and your Xiaomi account, because the phone may ask for them after the reset.
Step by step
Restart the phone the normal way
Hold the power button and choose Reboot. If the menu does not appear, go to the next step.
Force restart
Hold the power button for more than 10 seconds, until the phone restarts. Do not let go too early.
Check for updates
Go to Settings → About phone → system version and choose Check for updates. A new version often cures freezing.
Free up space and clean up
In the Security app, choose Cleaner and delete temporary files and large files. If the phone is slow, also use Boost speed.
Find the guilty app
If the freezing started after you installed a new app, uninstall it. Also check for app updates in Google Play.
Back up your data
Warning: a factory reset deletes all data. Back up to Mi Cloud, or connect the phone to a computer and copy your photos and files.
Restore factory settings
Go to Settings → About phone → Factory reset and confirm. After the reset, check that the phone runs smoothly before you install all your apps.
- The phone freezes even after a factory reset.
- It is in a restart loop or does not get past the logo.
- It gets very hot or the battery drains in a few hours.
- The screen is damaged, the phone got wet or the battery is swollen.

Repair or buy new?
Restart, update and reset are free and usually enough. Do them yourself. If they do not help and the phone is several years old and cheap, a motherboard repair often does not pay off. Check it in the calculator by comparing the cost with the price of a new model.
