- 30–90 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 200–540 zł
Warning: restoring the system to factory settings deletes data from the drive. Back up your documents and photos. Keep the charger plugged in for the whole process and don't turn the laptop off while it runs.
Step by step
Do a hard restart
Hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Unplug the charger and USB devices, wait a minute and turn the laptop on again.
Test the hardware in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
Turn on the laptop and immediately press F2 repeatedly. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics will start and check things like the memory, drive and screen. Write down the error code if one appears.
Open the startup menu
Turn the laptop off, turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly. The startup menu with the available options will appear.
Start System Recovery
In the startup menu, press F11 if the option is available on your model. Not all HP models have it active, especially after a drive replacement.
Use the Windows tools
If F11 doesn't work, hold Shift and click Restart in Windows. Then choose Troubleshoot and Advanced options.
Warning: full reset
Warning: a factory reset deletes data from the drive. Back up before you confirm this option. If you can, choose the variant that keeps your files.
- The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics test shows a drive or memory error.
- F11 and the recovery menu don't start at all.
- The laptop gets very hot and shuts down by itself.
- The problem comes back after restoring the system.

Repair or buy new?
The hardware test and system recovery cost 0 zł and are often enough. If the test points to the drive, switching to an SSD is usually worth it. For an old laptop with several faults, use the calculator to see whether a new one makes more sense.

Does the hardware test delete data?
