DJI drone won't connect to the controller? Pairing step by step

Updated: October 2026

No connection to the controller is usually a matter of batteries, the USB cable or updates. The steps below solve most cases.

In short
Most common cause
faulty USB cable, weak battery or outdated software
Time
15–30 minutes
Repair shop, if nothing helps
270–1100 zł (communication module, board)
Before you start

Do this on the ground, with the propellers removed and away from people. Don't update the software when the battery is low, because an interrupted update can damage the drone. Don't use a swollen battery. Warning: a reset or reactivation can delete saved settings and waypoints. Back up important data in the app.

Step by step

  1. Charge the drone, the controller and your phone

Weak batteries cause an unstable connection. Charge all three devices before you start. Turn the drone and the controller off for a minute, then turn them back on.

  2. Check the USB cable between the controller and the phone

Try another cable, ideally an original or a good-quality one. Unlock your phone and make sure the plug sits all the way in. The cable is the most common cause of no connection.

  3. Update the app and the software

Update the DJI Fly app, then the drone and controller software through the app. Do this with charged batteries and don't interrupt the process.

  4. Create good conditions

Move away from sources of interference: Wi-Fi, high-voltage lines, metal structures. Place the drone close to the controller, within a few meters, with the antennas pointing toward it.

  5. Connect the drone to the app

Turn on the drone and the controller. If they don't connect, choose the option to connect to the drone in the DJI Fly app (the name depends on the model). The app will guide you step by step.

  6. Pair using the drone's button

On many models (for example Mavic Mini), with the drone on, hold its power button for about 4 seconds, until it beeps and the lights start blinking. After a successful pairing, the app shows the camera image. The procedure differs by model, so check your drone's manual on the manufacturer's website.

  7. Repeat with another cable or device

If it still won't connect, try another phone or cable. You can also update the firmware again. This will show whether the controller, the drone or the phone is at fault.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The drone won't turn on or doesn't respond to the power button.
  • The battery is swollen, hot or smells burnt.
  • The connection doesn't work with any cable or phone after the update.
  • After the drone has been dropped, gimbal, camera or motor errors appear.

How much does a repair shop charge?

Diagnosis at a repair shop110–270 zł
Replacing the cable or port in the controller140–410 zł
Replacing the battery340–820 zł
Repair of the communication module or board410–1200 zł

Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.

Repair or buy new?

The cable and the update cost nothing or a few dozen zloty, so start with them. Repairing the board in a cheaper drone can be a bad deal, because a new model costs only a little more. For more expensive drones, a repair usually makes sense. Work it out in the calculator.

FAQ

Why does the controller see the drone but there's no picture in the app?

Usually the USB cable, the app's permissions or outdated software is to blame. Change the cable, unlock your phone and update the app.

Can I update the drone without the controller?

It depends on the model. Many models update through the app once connected to the controller, so check your drone's manual.

The drone beeped and the lights are blinking. Does that mean it's paired?

That usually means the drone is waiting to be paired. The confirmation appears in the app or on the controller once the connection succeeds.
