Loud or overheating PS5 or Xbox? Cleaning, placement and when to see a repair shop

Updated: October 2026

A loud console is usually down to clogged air vents or a bad spot in your TV cabinet. You can do most of the fixes yourself in 15 minutes.

Don't open the main case of a console that's still under warranty. The PS5 processor is cooled with liquid metal, and replacing it badly can permanently damage the console, so leave that job to a repair shop.

Step by step

  1. Give the console some room

Place it so there's about 10 cm of free space on every side. Don't shut it in a cabinet with doors and don't put it right next to a radiator. The back of the console, where the warm air comes out, must be uncovered.

  2. Vacuum the vents

Switch the console off and unplug it. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush on low power to clean the grilles at the front and back. You can also blow them out with compressed air in short bursts.

  3. PS5: clean the dust catchers

Sony covers this in the manual. Take off the side panels (pull a corner up and slide the panel off). You'll see two dust catcher openings. Vacuum them out, and wipe the dust off the panels while you're at it.

  4. Check rest mode and updates

Update the console software. Manufacturers improve fan behaviour in updates. The console also heats up in rest mode, so turn off background downloads if you don't need them.

  5. Set the console up stably

A PS5 can stand upright or lie flat, but always on a level, hard surface (on its stand when upright). Carpet and soft surfaces block airflow.

  6. Decide if it's time for a repair shop

If the console still roars after vacuuming, shows an overheating message or shuts itself down, there's dust in the heatsink or the thermal paste has dried out. A cleaning at a repair shop will fix it.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The console shuts itself down during a game.
  • An overheating message appears.
  • The fan knocks or grinds.
  • The console is 3–4 years old and has never been cleaned inside.

How much does a repair shop charge?

Cleaning the inside of the console160–270 zł
Cleaning + new thermal paste / liquid metal (PS5)240–410 zł
Fan replacement200–410 zł
Cooling stand / dock with a fan80–200 zł

Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.

Repair or buy new?

Cleaning a console is a cheap “repair” that extends its life by years. A PS5 or Xbox Series is worth far more than the cost of cleaning, so it always pays off.

FAQ

Do cooling stands for the PS5 help?

They may lower the temperature a little, but they don't replace cleaning or a good location. Cheap stands can be louder than the console itself.

How often should I clean the console?

It's worth vacuuming the PS5 dust catchers every few months. A full internal clean at a repair shop is usually enough every 2–3 years, more often if you have pets.

Can a loud fan damage the console?

The noise itself can't, but high temperatures over a long time shorten the life of the electronics and can cause shutdowns. It's better to act early.
