Robot vacuum freezing? Reset, map and Wi-Fi, step by step

Updated: October 2026

A robot that stands still, loses its map or can’t see the app usually needs a restart, cleaning the sensors or re-pairing with Wi-Fi.

In short
Most common cause
dirty sensors, a wrong map or a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network
Time
15–30 minutes
Repair shop, if nothing helps
200–610 zł
Before you start

Before cleaning the sensors and brushes, turn the robot off and take it off the dock. Warning: a factory reset and deleting the map erase the map, no-go zones, virtual walls, schedules and the Wi-Fi connection. Take a screenshot of the map and settings first so you can easily recreate them.

Step by step

  1. Restart the power

Turn the robot off, take it off the dock and unplug the dock’s power adapter for a minute. Plug the adapter back in and put the robot on the dock.

  2. Do a hard restart

Roborock: hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the robot turns off, then turn it on again. iRobot: take the robot off the dock. On a Roomba i and s series, hold the Clean button for about 20 seconds, and on a Roomba j for about 9 seconds, then release and wait for it to restart. Xiaomi: hold the power button until the robot turns off. Check the time in your model’s manual.

  3. Clean the sensors and check the dock’s position

Wipe the sensors (cliff, bumper, dock, lidar or camera) with a soft, dry cloth. Remove tangled hair from the wheels and brushes. Leave 1.5 m of free space in front of the dock and 0.5 m on each side. Nothing may cover the charging contacts. Don’t move the dock, because after it changes place the map often stops matching.

  4. Update the software

In the app, update the robot’s firmware, then start cleaning again.

  5. Rebuild the map

Move chairs and cables out of the way, leave the doors open and turn on the lights. Warning: deleting the map erases rooms, no-go zones and schedules. On a Roborock, go to the map settings and delete the map. In iRobot Home, choose Smart Maps and delete the map, or start a Mapping Run. Then run a full cleaning, split the rooms and save the map.

  6. Fix the Wi-Fi connection

Connect your phone to a 2.4 GHz network, because most robots don’t support 5 GHz. If your router uses one name for both bands, separate them or turn off 5 GHz while you pair. Turn off any VPN, move the robot and phone close to the router, and type the password without a trailing space.

  7. Reset the robot’s Wi-Fi and add it again

Roborock and Xiaomi: with the robot on, hold the Home and power buttons together for about 3 seconds until you hear a voice message, then add the robot in the app and choose the right server region. iRobot: in the app, choose Settings → Wi-Fi and set up the connection again from scratch.

  8. Last resort: factory reset

Warning: it erases the map, zones, schedules and Wi-Fi. In the app, choose Settings → Reset (the name depends on the brand), then pair the robot again.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The robot doesn’t turn on or charge after a reset and cleaning the contacts.
  • The wheels, brush or fan don’t spin, or they grind.
  • The battery is swollen, gets hot or you smell burning.
  • The robot keeps bumping into obstacles even with clean sensors.

How much does a repair shop charge?

Diagnosis at a repair shop70–200 zł
Replacing the battery270–610 zł
Replacing a wheel or brush motor200–480 zł
Replacing the lidar or motherboard410–950 zł

Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.

Repair or buy new?

A restart, cleaning and re-pairing solve most problems for free. If the battery needs replacing in a robot that is a few years old, repairing it often pays off, but a motherboard or lidar in a cheap model usually doesn’t. Check it in the calculator.
