Electric scooter: display error and app problems, what to do

Updated: October 2026

An error code or no connection to the app often has a simple cause: a stuck brake lever, a loose cable or Bluetooth permissions. Check these before you visit a repair shop.

Turn the scooter off before you check the cables. Don’t ride if the brakes don’t work properly. Don’t interrupt a software update, because the scooter may stop working. Warning: after you delete and reinstall the app, or remove the device from your account, you may lose saved settings and ride history, so take a screenshot of your settings.

Step by step

  1. Write down the error code

Note the code from the display and look it up in the manual or the app. The meaning of codes differs between models.

  2. Turn the scooter off and on

Turn it off for 30 seconds and on again. Don’t touch the throttle or the brake while you do it.

  3. Check the lock in the app

If the scooter is locked (“lock”), unlock it in the app.

  4. Check the brake lever

A stuck or loose lever sends a braking signal and the scooter won’t move. Press it a few times and tighten its mount.

  5. Check the cables and connectors

At the handlebars and at the battery, the plugs must be dry and well connected. Charge the scooter fully.

  6. Update the software

In the app (Xiaomi Home or Mi Home, Ninebot), check the error code and update the firmware. Warning: don’t turn the scooter off during the update. Then turn the scooter off and on.

  7. Fix the app connection

Stand a few metres away, turn on Bluetooth and location, and give the app permission for nearby devices. Don’t connect from your phone’s Bluetooth settings, add the scooter only from inside the app. If it was already paired, remove it from the Bluetooth list.

  8. Close the app and add the scooter again

Close the app completely, turn Bluetooth and the scooter off and on. If it was assigned to another account, remove it from that account first. Finally, uninstall the app, install it again and log in to the same account.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The error comes back despite a restart and checking the brake and cables.
  • The battery is swollen, hot or smells bad.
  • The brakes don’t work, the wheel locks up or you hear grinding.
  • The scooter got wet inside, or the display is cracked.

Repair or buy new?

You can fix many errors yourself with the brake lever, cables or an update. If it’s the controller, repairing it usually pays off. Replacing the battery in an older, cheaper scooter is often not worth it. Check it in the calculator.
