Nintendo Switch freezing? Forced shutdown and Maintenance Mode
A forced shutdown and a system update are usually enough. If not, Maintenance Mode will help.

Warning: initializing the console deletes data, and games on the microSD card stop working until you download them again. Cloud save backup works only with Nintendo Switch Online, so check first whether you have it. Charge the console to at least 30%.
Step by step
Force a shutdown
Hold the power button for 12 seconds, wait a moment and turn the console on.
Charge and update
Charge to at least 30% and install the system update. Check the free space in system memory and on the microSD card.
Check a single game
If only one game stutters, close it, update it or reinstall it. Your saves usually stay.
Enter Maintenance Mode
Turn the console off, then hold Volume + and Volume - together and press the power button. Keep holding the buttons until the menu appears.
Choose initialization without deleting saves
In Maintenance Mode, choose “Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data”. Your saves, screenshots and user data stay.
Full initialization as a last step
Warning: this option deletes the remaining data, and games on the microSD card stop working until you download them again. If you have Nintendo Switch Online, back up your saves to the cloud first.
