Dishwasher door drops or won't close? What to check

Updated: October 2026

When the dishwasher door falls with a bang, a spring or hinge cable has usually snapped. When it won't close, the culprit is often a rack, dishes or the latch.

Unplug the dishwasher before looking at the hinges. The springs are under tension and can hurt your fingers. Don't pull a built-in dishwasher out of the cabinet yourself if you don't know how to undo the fixings.

Step by step

  1. Check what's blocking the door

A pulled-out lower rack, sticking-out plates or the cutlery tray can stop the door from closing. Push the racks in fully and check nothing sticks out.

  2. Clean the latch and seal

Food residue and limescale on the latch or seal make closing harder. Wipe them with a cloth and warm water.

  3. Check the resistance when opening

Open the door slowly. If one side moves more easily or the door drops without resistance, the spring or cable on that side has snapped.

  4. Listen for creaking

Grinding or a snap when opening usually means a broken cable or a worn pulley. Fix such a door soon, because it can damage the hinge.

  5. Check the furniture panel

In a built-in dishwasher the heavy front panel must match the springs. After fitting a heavier panel the door may drop. Many models let you adjust the spring tension as described in the manual.

  6. Replace the springs and cables as a set

Repair kits usually cost 40–120 zł. Fitting them means pulling the dishwasher out and removing the side panels. If you're not confident, leave it to a repair shop.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • the door won't close even with empty racks and a clean latch
  • the dishwasher shows a door error or won't start
  • the hinge is bent or cracked
  • you can't safely pull the dishwasher out of the cabinet

Repair or buy new?

This is almost always a worthwhile repair. The parts are cheap and the job takes an hour. Don't put it off, because a dropping door wrecks the hinges and can hit your legs.

FAQ

Why does my dishwasher door fall open with a bang?

Most often a spring or hinge cable on one side has snapped. Less often the furniture panel is too heavy.

Can I replace the springs myself?

Yes, if you can pull the dishwasher out and remove the side covers. Buy parts for your exact model from the rating plate.

Why won't the dishwasher start even though the door is closed?

The latch may not detect that it's closed. Clean it, and if that doesn't help, the latch needs replacing.
