Vacuum cleaner won't turn on? Battery, filter and overheating protection

Updated: October 2026

A vacuum that won't start has often just overheated because of a clogged filter or has a flat battery. Check this before you take it to a repair shop.

Before you start

Unplug the vacuum and remove the battery, if you can, before cleaning. Wash filters only if the manual allows it, and dry them for at least a day. Don't use a swollen battery.

Step by step

  1. Charge the battery or check the socket

On a cordless vacuum plug in the charger and check the LED lights up. On a corded one check the socket with another appliance.

  2. Wait 30–60 minutes

After long vacuuming or with a clogged filter the motor overheats and the protection cuts it out. Let it cool down.

  3. Clean the filters and bin

Empty the bin or replace the bag. Clean the filters as described in the manual. A clogged filter is the most common cause of overheating.

  4. Check the tube and brush

A blocked tube or a brush wrapped in hair can stop the vacuum. Clear blockages and cut the hair off the brush.

  5. Check the trigger and lock

On vacuums with a trigger lock, check it's set correctly. On many models you have to hold the trigger the whole time.

  6. Check the cable

On a corded vacuum inspect the cable along its whole length. A repair shop replaces a frayed or scorched cable.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • the battery is swollen or won't hold a charge
  • you smell burning or see sparks
  • the cable is damaged
  • the vacuum won't start despite clean filters and a charged battery

How much does a repair shop charge?

Repair or buy new?

Filters and the battery are sensible repairs. Replacing the motor in a cheap vacuum rarely pays off, in a more expensive cordless one it usually does.
