Controller stick drift (DualSense, Xbox, Joy-Con): calibration, cleaning, replacement
Drift is the most common controller fault. The stick reports movement even though you aren't touching it. Calibration or cleaning sometimes helps, but a worn-out mechanism simply has to be replaced.
- Cause
- wear and dirt on the potentiometers in the stick
- Time
- 10–15 minutes
- Stick replacement at a repair shop
- 70–180 zł
Don't pour liquids under the rubber cover of the stick. For cleaning, use only compressed air or a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Opening the controller while it's under warranty may void the warranty.
Step by step
Confirm it's drift and not the game
Test in a few games and in the console menu. If the cursor or character moves without you touching the stick everywhere, it's drift. If it only happens in one game, look for the “deadzone” in its settings and increase it slightly.
Update the controller firmware
PS5: Settings → Accessories → Controllers → Device Software. Xbox: the Xbox Accessories app. Switch: Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Update Controllers. Updates sometimes improve how the sticks are handled.
Calibrate the sticks
Switch: Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks. Steam Deck also has calibration in its settings. PS5 and Xbox don't have built-in calibration. On the DualSense, a reset helps: press the button in the small hole on the back with a pin for approx. 5 seconds. Turn the Xbox controller off, take out the batteries for a minute and pair it again.
Blow out the stick with compressed air
Tilt the stick hard to one side and blow short bursts into the gap under the rubber cover. Rotate the stick in circles and repeat from every side. Dust and crumbs are a common cause of drift in newer controllers.
Rotate the stick in full circles
After blowing it out, rotate the stick firmly in full circles for a minute in both directions. This sometimes “cleans” the potentiometer tracks, and the drift disappears or weakens for a few weeks.
Decide: replace the stick or buy a new controller
If the drift comes back, the mechanism is worn. Replacing the stick at a repair shop usually costs 70–180 zł. Magnetic sticks (Hall effect) practically never drift, so it's worth asking for them when you get it replaced.
- The drift comes back despite cleaning and calibration.
- The controller is under warranty. Make a warranty claim first, because drift is often accepted as a defect.
- The stick is loose, cracked or doesn't return to the center.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| Stick replacement: DualSense / Xbox controller | 70–150 zł |
| Stick replacement with Hall effect (drift-resistant) | 120–180 zł |
| Stick replacement in a Joy-Con | 60–120 zł |
| New original controller | 250–380 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
Replacing the stick usually costs half the price of a new controller or less, so it pays off. This is especially true for Edge and Elite controllers, which are expensive. With cheap, old controllers it's sometimes more sensible to buy a new one.

Is drift covered by the warranty?
Usually yes, as long as there are no signs of liquid damage or mechanical damage. In Poland the seller is responsible for defects for 2 years from purchase, so it's worth starting with a claim at the shop.
Can I replace the stick myself?
On Joy-Cons it's easy, and the parts and tools cost a few dozen złoty. On PS5 and Xbox controllers the stick module has to be desoldered, so without a soldering iron and experience it's better to take it to a repair shop.
What are Hall effect sticks?
They're sticks that measure position with a magnet instead of tracks that wear out. They practically never drift. More and more repair shops install them instead of the originals.
