TV remote not working? What to check before buying a new one
A dead remote is usually a cheap fix: flat batteries, dirty contacts or lost pairing. These steps take about 15 minutes.
- Most common cause
- batteries, contacts or lost remote pairing
- Time
- 10–20 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 110–340 zł (remote or receiver in the TV)
Don't open the TV or put anything inside it. Throw used batteries into a proper collection bin, and don't touch leaked batteries with bare hands. Only open the remote where the battery cover is meant to be opened.
Step by step
Replace the batteries
Insert two new batteries of the same type and match the + and – ends. Don't mix new and old ones. Check the contacts in the compartment. If they are green or white from leakage, wipe them with a cotton swab and a little rubbing alcohol, then let them dry.
Clean the remote's IR light
Wipe the front of the remote, where the signal comes out, and the small receiver window on the TV with a dry cloth. Dirt and greasy residue can shorten the range a lot.
Test the remote with your phone camera
Point the remote's IR light at your phone's camera lens and press any button. If you see a flashing light on the phone screen, the remote is sending a signal. No light means the remote is broken. Warning: a Bluetooth remote (for example LG Magic Remote or Samsung Smart Remote) may not light up on camera even though it works, because part of the signal goes by radio.
Unplug the TV for a minute
Pull the plug from the socket, wait a minute and plug it back in. This refreshes the TV's receiver. Sometimes the remote starts working right after.
Pair the remote again
Samsung Smart Remote: stand close to the TV and hold the Back and Play/Pause buttons together for 3 seconds until a pairing message appears. LG Magic Remote: point the remote at the TV and press the wheel (OK). If that doesn't help, hold Home and Back together for 5 seconds to reset the pairing. For other brands, look for “remote pairing” in the manual.
Use an app as a backup remote
Install your TV maker's app, or the Google TV app if you have Android TV. Your phone must be on the same Wi-Fi network. If the TV responds to the app but not to the remote, the remote is the problem.
Try the buttons on the TV itself
Most TVs have a button or a small joystick under the frame or on the back. If it turns the TV on and changes the volume, the TV itself is fine. Then buy a replacement remote.
- The remote doesn't light up on your phone camera, and a new remote doesn't work either.
- The TV doesn't respond to the remote, the app or the buttons on the TV.
- The TV turns on and off by itself, which can mean a power supply fault.
- The TV smells burnt or you hear crackling.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| New original remote (with setup or pairing) | 110–340 zł |
| Bluetooth voice remote for a premium TV | 200–540 zł |
| Replacing the infrared receiver in the TV | 200–480 zł |
| TV diagnosis at a repair shop | 70–200 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
If the TV responds to its buttons or to the app, buy a new remote or a universal replacement. This is almost always the cheapest option, and there's no point replacing the TV over it. If the TV doesn't respond to any control, the fault is in the board or the power supply. In that case, use the calculator to check whether a repair makes sense for your model's value.

Why does my TV remote only work from up close?
Most often the batteries are weak or the IR light is dirty. Replace the batteries and wipe the remote and the TV's receiver. If that doesn't help, the remote is worn out.
Can a universal remote replace the original?
On most TVs, yes, but it may lack some features, such as voice search. On Smart TVs the original remote gives you the most options.
My Samsung or LG remote won't connect even with new batteries. What can I do?
Pair it again as described in the steps above. Also unplug the TV for a minute. If it still doesn't work, the remote may be damaged.
