Apps crashing or freezing? Clear the cache and update
One app that keeps freezing is usually a problem with its temporary files or an old version, not with the hardware. It takes about a quarter of an hour and costs nothing.
- Most common cause
- an old app version, a full cache or no free space
- Time
- 10–20 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 140–340 zł for diagnosis and a system restore
Clearing the cache is safe, but clearing an app's data or reinstalling it can delete your account, settings and saved files. Before you get to that point, make sure you have a backup or that your data is in the cloud (for example photos, chats and game saves).
Step by step
Close the app completely and open it again
Just going to the home screen is not enough, because the app keeps running in the background. Swipe it away from the recent apps list and open it again. Sometimes that already fixes the problem.
Restart your phone or tablet
A restart clears the working memory and ends frozen processes. Turn the device off, wait a few seconds and turn it on again.
Update the app and the system
Open the App Store or Google Play and check whether an update is available for the app. Update the device's system too. On Android, also update Android System WebView and Chrome in Google Play, because bugs in them often make apps close.
Free up storage space
When a device is almost full, apps stop running reliably. Delete videos you don't need, downloaded files and apps you don't use. A few free gigabytes will help.
Clear the app's cache (Android)
Samsung: Settings → Apps → select the app → Storage → Clear cache. Xiaomi: Settings → Apps → Manage apps → select the app → Clear data → Clear cache. Names can differ a little depending on the system version. The cache is just temporary files, so clearing it does not delete your data.
iPhone and iPad: offload the app
iOS has no button for clearing the cache. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage), select the app and tap Offload App. The app is removed, but your data stays.
Warning: delete the data or reinstall the app
This is the last step. Clearing an app's data (Android) or deleting and reinstalling it removes your account, settings and saved files. Make a backup first or make sure your data is in the cloud. On iPhone: press and hold the icon, choose Remove App, then download it again from the App Store.
- All apps close, not just one.
- The device gets very hot or loses battery quickly.
- The problem comes back right after a system restore.
- Memory or SD card error messages keep appearing.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| Diagnosis and system reinstall | 140–340 zł |
| Replacing damaged storage (flash/eMMC), if that is the cause | 340–820 zł |
| Battery replacement, when the problem comes from a worn battery | 200–680 zł |
| Motherboard repair | 410–1200 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
In most cases updating and clearing the cache yourself is enough, so fixing it at home pays off. If all your apps close and the device is old, a repair shop may not be worth it. Use the calculator to check how much it is still worth.

Will clearing the cache delete my photos and accounts?
No. The cache is just temporary files. App data is a separate option, and that is the one that can delete your account and saved settings.
Why does the app close right after I open it?
Most often it is an old app version, a bug in a system component (WebView on Android) or lack of space. Update everything and free up storage.
How often should I clear the cache?
There is no need to do it as prevention. Only do it when a specific app is misbehaving.
