Samsung Galaxy freezing? Restart, Safe mode and factory reset

Updated: October 2026

A freezing Galaxy can often be saved at home in a few minutes. Start with a force restart and leave the factory reset for last.

Restart and Safe mode do not delete data. A factory reset removes everything from the phone, so first back up to Samsung Cloud or to a computer with Smart Switch. Also note down your Google and Samsung account details, because you will need them after the reset.

Step by step

  1. Try a normal restart

Hold the power button and choose Restart. If the screen responds, this is often enough.

  2. Force restart

If the screen does not respond, hold the power button and Volume Down together for more than 7 seconds. The phone will switch off and start again on its own.

  3. Run Optimization

Go to Settings → Device care and tap Optimize now. The phone will close background apps and clean up memory.

  4. Update the system and apps

Check for system updates in Settings and for app updates in Google Play. Old app versions often cause freezing.

  5. Try Safe mode

Hold the power button, then touch and hold Power off, then tap Safe mode. If the phone runs smoothly in Safe mode, a recently installed app is to blame. Uninstall it, then restart the phone to leave Safe mode.

  6. Back up your data

Warning: a factory reset deletes all data. Back up to Samsung Cloud, or connect the phone to a computer and use Smart Switch.

  7. Restore factory settings

Go to Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset and confirm. After the reset, set up the phone from scratch and check whether the problem is gone before you install all your apps.

Stop and take it to a repair shop if
  • The phone freezes even after a factory reset.
  • The device heats up when idle or the battery drains very fast.
  • The phone is stuck in a restart loop or on the Samsung logo.
  • The case bulges, the screen lifts or the phone got wet.

Repair or buy new?

Restart, Safe mode and a reset are free and solve most software problems. Do them yourself. If the phone still freezes after a reset, it is the hardware, most often the battery or the motherboard. For a model that is several years old, compare the repair cost with the price of a new phone in the calculator.
