Coffee machine makes weak coffee? Grind, dose and cleaning, step by step
Watery coffee with no crema is usually about settings, old beans or a dirty brew unit, not a breakdown. Start with the simplest fixes.
- Most common cause
- grind too coarse or old beans
- Time
- 15–30 minutes
- Repair shop, if nothing helps
- 270–680 zł to clean or repair the brew unit
Before you take out the brew unit and clean the chamber, turn the machine off and unplug it. Don’t wash the brew unit with detergent or in the dishwasher, only with lukewarm water. Turn the grind knob only while the grinder is running, otherwise you will damage the mechanism. Never put metal tools into the grinder.
Step by step
Increase the coffee strength or the amount of beans
In the machine’s menu, set a stronger coffee or a bigger bean dose. It’s the easiest change and often enough.
Set a finer grind
Change it one step at a time and judge the result only after a few coffees, because the grinder still holds some older, coarser grounds. Turn the knob only while the grinder is running. On Philips and Saeco machines, press the knob and turn it one step (a lower setting means a finer grind). On DeLonghi machines the knob is inside the bean hopper, so turn it one step towards the lower numbers.
Use fresh beans
Beans more than a few weeks past opening give coffee with no crema and a flat taste. Buy a smaller pack and keep it tightly closed.
Clean the brew unit
Turn the machine off, take out the brew unit and rinse it under lukewarm water with no detergent. Leave it to dry. Also clear the leftover ground coffee from the chamber where it sits.
Descale the machine
Limescale reduces water flow and temperature, and the coffee comes out watery. Use the descaler recommended by the manufacturer and run the whole descaling program, including the rinse.
Check the water filter and hardness setting
If your machine has a filter, make sure it isn’t worn out. Also check that the water hardness setting matches your water. A wrong setting makes the machine warn you about limescale less often.
- The coffee is still watery after changing the grind, using new beans and descaling.
- Only a few drops come out, or the water flows very slowly.
- You hear loud grinding from the grinder, or the brew unit doesn’t go back in.
- Water leaks from under the machine.
How much does a repair shop charge?
| Cleaning and servicing the machine | 200–480 zł |
| Replacing the brew unit | 340–820 zł |
| Replacing the grinder | 410–950 zł |
| Replacing the pump | 410–950 zł |
Typical prices at independent repair shops in Poland, October 2026. Authorised service centres and big cities can be more expensive.
Repair or buy new?
Many machines with this problem recover after you change the grind, use fresh beans and descale. That costs nothing or a few dozen zloty. If the problem is the pump, grinder or brew unit, buying a new machine is often better for a cheaper model, while a more expensive one with automatic milk is worth repairing. How do I set the grind so the coffee is stronger?
Set a finer grind, changing it one step at a time and only while the grinder is running. You will see the effect after 2–3 coffees.
Why does my coffee have no crema?
Most often the beans are old or the grind is too coarse. A clean brew unit and a descaled machine help too.
How often should I clean the brew unit?
Rinse it with lukewarm water about once a week, depending on how much you use the machine. The manufacturer gives its own recommendations in the manual.
